The proclamation, read during the commission conference, credited the program with providing "meaningful opportunities to experience public service, leadership and civic engagement" and said the June 8 program engaged students across 19 municipalities in Miami‑Dade County. The body said the initiative pairs students with mayors, commissioners, clerks and other officials so they can observe governmental operations firsthand.
"We want it to be special — power to the people," said the organization's executive director, who described Youth Governance Day as a flagship civic engagement program that has grown since its 2022 founding. Isadora, identified as the program coordinator‑elect for the initiative, said participating as a mayor for her city boosted her leadership skills and confidence.
The commission also presented a certificate to Lucas, a senior at North Miami Beach Senior High School recognized for leadership roles including yearbook president and athletic trainer. "I just wanna say I'm so grateful for this experience," Lucas said, calling his day as mayor "something I will never forget."
Mayor and commission members praised the program as a way to build future civic leaders and noted the short conference had been delayed by a power outage earlier in the evening. The proclamation is purely ceremonial; no policy or funding decisions were made during the session.
The commission adjourned the conference portion of its meeting and moved on to the regular commission agenda at 6:16 p.m.
