City staff presented the proposed design for Santa Fe Springs’ 2027 Tournament of Roses float and the council approved the design and an additional $30,000 allocation from the Art in Public Places Fund to address increased construction and transport costs.
Staff member Kylie (S13) said the float, developed by Phoenix Decorating Company, celebrates the city’s Hispanic heritage with kiosks, a folklorico dancer, mariachi musicians and floral displays. The Heritage Arts Advisory Committee reviewed the design on May 26 and provided input. Staff advised the council that tournament rules limit use of foreign national flags and that a piñata element would remain in the design.
Kylie said the requested $30,000 would come from the Art in Public Places Fund and would not affect the General Fund. Parks staff and the city manager noted they were pursuing sponsorships that could offset some costs and mentioned discussions with a large sponsor that might cover half the expense if finalized.
Council moved to approve the design and funding allocation (motion by Martin; 2nd by Rodriguez) and the motion passed by voice vote.
Staff said they will finalize performer logistics (including a proposed mariachi band and folklorico dancers) by July and will return with the exact list of participants and any sponsor commitments.
