Birmingham Community Charter High District board authorizes submission of charter renewal to LAUSD

A staff member told the board the district’s publication of data created a target window for submission and that charter oversight staff advised submitting in July so the school could use 2025 school-year data. “We were advised by the charter, our charter oversight support staff to submit in July,” the staff member said, adding the school will not submit a material revision at this time and that Miss Cindy has been the lead author on the renewal packet.
The staff member said the school has an appointment with the district to submit on July 16 at 11:00 a.m. in Beaudry and scheduled a Zoom meeting with charter support staff on Friday to finalize the materials. The staff member also said renewal notification is expected by Oct. 13 and that a material revision to increase enrollment could be considered in early 2027 if the board chooses to pursue that later.
Board member Doris Foster participated in roll call and other members recorded their votes when the chair called the roll. The clerk read names and members answered; when the chair called the question the resolution received recorded 'yes' votes from Bob Alexander, Marla Benjamin, Mike Bennett, Nick Allen, Dennis Lassiter, Bob Barnes, Laurie Pat Xavier, Michael Powell, John White and Virginia Riverbough. The chair announced, “It passes.”
The action authorizes designated representatives (named by the staff) to submit the renewal, answer district questions and follow up as needed. No motion text naming a mover or seconder was recorded in the transcript. The board did not approve any material revisions to the charter at this meeting; staff said those would be submitted separately if the board later seeks to increase enrollment.
