The Hardyston Township Board of Education elected Brian Drehlich president and Ed Riley vice president during its Jan. 6 reorganization meeting and voted to accept Superintendent Dr. Michael Ryder's resignation, with several members saying they approve 2ith regret.
The board opened the meeting at 7 p.m. and certified the results of the recent school election before taking roll call and proceeding to officer nominations. After nominations, the chair announced, "The majority is for mister Brian Drehlich. The president of the board is mister Brian Drehlich." The board then elected Ed Riley as vice president.
Board members used the addendum portion of the agenda to address P8, Dr. Ryder's formal resignation. Dr. Ryder, who had announced his intention to resign earlier in the meeting, told the board, "For now, my plan is to act just as I did on day one, which is to continue to do great things for kids, look out for the best of everybody, and do my absolute best." Several trustees offered tributes and described his leadership as steady and visible.
The motion to accept the resignation carried on a roll call vote; multiple members said they voted in favor "with regret". Members also discussed plans for a send-off and transition and noted that the board will take additional steps over the next weeks regarding committee appointments and interim leadership.
Board action at the session also included routine reorganizational business: adopting the listed governance items (calendar and procedural reaffirmations) and directing staff to solicit interest from members for committee assignments. The chair said she would email members about committee roles and bring formal committee appointments to the board at a follow-up meeting in two weeks.
The board concluded the reorganizational portion of the meeting and moved into the regular agenda, scheduling upcoming budget work and noting that contract negotiations and the superintendent transition will be priorities in the coming months.
