Board OKs $82,000 Sagamore Institute contract for housing work; approves downtown Mural Fest closures and parks events

The Board of Public Works and Safety approved a contract with the Sagamore Institute not to exceed $82,000 to support initiatives tied to an anticipated REDI grant for housing improvements near downtown. Planning Director Craig Phillips said the funding comes from a Health Foundation grant previously approved by the board. The board approved the contract; one member (Kosher) was recorded as abstaining.
Also on the agenda, event organizers asked for sidewalk and parking-lane closures July 7–12 for a mural-painting week in downtown La Porte (set-up July 7). Annette Leffler and partners said the project — "Pink the Town" — is a cooperative event with the Lebesnik Center, Urban Enterprise Association and the Health Foundation of La Porte; organizers said the work is grant-funded and invited the public to observe artists creating four murals in three downtown locations. The board approved the requested closures.
Parks staff announced a dedication for Maria Fruits Plaza and a schedule of Independence celebration events, including a July 3 fireworks show and city band concerts in the amphitheater the week of July 1–3. Parks directed that the dedication be moved indoors if weather poses a threat.
