Administration responded that the wording came from the MSMA sample policy and that using a more general statutory reference can keep the policy compliant if the law changes; several members said they preferred a version that names the statute more precisely. The board agreed to obtain an opinion and further review (including consulting the MSMA author who drafted the sample) and to make the suggested edits before returning the policy for a final vote.
No vote was taken; members noted that the policy committee chair and administration will gather clarifications and legal opinions prior to a future meeting.
