The Historic Preservation Commission approved its Sept. 19, 2024 minutes and spent the bulk of its Oct. 17, 2024 meeting discussing apparent construction activity in the downtown area that members said had not followed review procedures.
The commission, meeting in the Village Board Room, voted to accept the Sept. 19 minutes (motion by Linda Smith; second by Courtney Henderson) and noted the minutes should be amended to record a reduction in membership referenced at that earlier meeting.
Commission members discussed multiple sites where work appears to be underway without formal review. Members raised windows being replaced on buildings associated with Angel Javier and concerns about fire escapes on properties linked to Frank Corso. The Old Sugar Bowl/Beaver Alley area was described as showing “suspicious activity,” and members said they want staff or code enforcement to investigate whether proper permits or historic-review steps have been followed.
Commission member Mary Anne Braunbach asked that code enforcement check the interior progress on Ms. Pooley’s building in addition to exterior work, and requested follow-up on activity around Beaver Alley. The minutes record the request but do not specify the results of any prior inspections.
Tim McMurray said he will present correspondence on behalf of the commission to the village board at its Oct. 23 meeting seeking certification from the CLG (Certified Local Government) program, which the commission framed as a formal next step to support oversight and preservation work.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn at 6:00 p.m. (motion by Linda Smith; second by Courtney Henderson); no other formal votes or ordinance actions were taken.
Next steps noted in the minutes: ask code enforcement to inspect the named properties as appropriate and have Tim McMurray present the commission’s correspondence to the village board on Oct. 23.
