Leadership Academy presents Sun Valley wildfire mitigation pilot, recommends home-hardening outreach

Participants in the 2025–26 Washoe County Leadership Academy presented their class project on wildfire mitigation and a home-hardening pilot focused in Sun Valley. Presenters described a three-pronged approach: outreach to elementary schools, conducting home assessments, and providing community-based educational resources about home-hardening actions.
Academy members worked with Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and Nevada Cooperative Extension to train volunteers and conduct at least nine home assessments in Sun Valley; the project recommended two homes for hardening and turned those recommendations over to fire partners to pursue further action. The group also distributed activity books to fourth-graders (about 355 across 16 classrooms) and engaged with community events to share educational materials.
Presenters urged continued engagement with existing partners, redirection of funding toward fire-mitigation activities, and use of future Academy projects to replicate the pilot across the county. Commissioners praised the work, noted the project’s timeliness given recent local fire activity, and encouraged leveraging the class’s efforts for public information campaigns.
What’s next: Truckee Meadows Fire and Cooperative Extension will help move recommended homes into the hardening phase; staff and partners will explore funding and county support to scale successful elements countywide.
