Board honors retirees and student achievements at June meeting

At its June meeting the Malverne Union Free School District board used much of its agenda to recognize student civic work, student competition winners and retiring staff.
The Davidson Avenue Ambassadors were acknowledged for their landmarking work on the Lakeview Public Library and invited to show materials compiled for the application. The board also recognized student athletes who received New York State Public High School Athletic Association sportsmanship awards and three students for their South Shore Science Fair achievement.
The board presented a new retiree tradition suggested by the superintendent: a glass flame to symbolize passion and service. District speakers delivered personal tributes to a series of retirees, including Stephen Benfante, Gina Rosalia, Janine Greco, Robin (last name not specified) and Amy Hermann, describing years of service, program leadership and community contributions. The district also honored Russell Myers, lead security at Malverne High School, for 17 years of service.
Board members praised retirees' institutional memory and community ties and encouraged the public to join end‑of‑year events including the Juneteenth Jubilee and upcoming moving‑up and graduation ceremonies.
