College Station ISD advisory committee urges district to deepen teacher support, strengthen communications

Members of a first‑year College Station ISD Community Advisory Committee presented recommendations Tuesday urging the district to make teacher support a continuing priority and to involve community partners in practical ways.

Austin Dunson of the communications department said the group — roughly 60 members at formation, including parents, staff, retired educators and community members — spent the year building relationships, reviewing teacher‑salary and retention data, examining professional learning and listening to teacher perspectives.

“Teacher support encompasses more than just our communications department,” Dunson said. He summarized committee recommendations to collect campus‑level feedback on workload and burnout, strengthen targeted professional learning and create communication systems that highlight teacher success stories and practical classroom needs for donors and community partners.

Melanie Ward, who co‑facilitated the committee, said committee members repeatedly raised workload and burnout as a top concern and recommended the district pursue surveys and campus conversations to ground next steps.

The committee also suggested using the group as a vehicle to help shape legislative priorities for the 2027 session and to expand meetings and stakeholder involvement next year.

Trustees welcomed the recommendations and asked staff to fold committee input into implementation planning, noting some items will require cross‑department coordination.

What’s next: staff will process survey responses (Ward said the end‑of‑year staff survey remained open through the end of the month) and bring specific implementation steps and communications plans back to the board.
