High-school students present hypothetical elementary school design emphasizing safety, history and sustainability

High-school students in the district's Project Lead The Way civil engineering and architecture class presented a hypothetical elementary-school design to the Winneconne Community School District board on April 20.
Tech-ed teacher Chris Serps introduced the project and said the students had worked with a local contractor and an architectural firm to build curriculum and a realistic design charrette. Student presenters Andrew Sperling and Yvonne Zeller described a small community survey they used to guide choices.
"60% of the responders would like a new elementary school," one presenter said, and "80% of the respondents would like to include portions of Winnet County history in the new design." The students reported two popular maximum budgets in the survey: $50,000,000 and $80+ million. They also cautioned their survey was small and flagged sample-size limitations during the presentation.
Design priorities the students highlighted included a secure entry that could serve as a security barrier, safer drop-off and pickup lanes with raised loading platforms to reduce wandering children at bus loading, ample natural light, multiple smaller lunch rooms for scheduling flexibility and a compact 'sports complex' that could be opened to community users with separate entrances and locked partitions. Sustainability features discussed included solar panels, EV chargers, rainwater collection and pursuing federal funding options such as the Inflation Reduction Act to offset upfront costs.
Serps and the students framed the project as an educational exercise and a way to test community priorities; the class plans to refine the model and Revit renderings and present to professionals on May 15. Board members and meeting attendees asked technical questions about roof pitch, gym layout and how to secure space for STEAM programming in existing facilities.
The presentation concluded with students offering printed models and an invitation to review their curriculum and materials.
