Resident describes Kingwood Avenue bus crash, urges speed reductions and sidewalks

During the public-comment portion of the meeting, a resident described a Dec. 15 morning collision in which a stopped school bus was struck from behind on Kingwood Avenue and said one child suffered a concussion.
The resident said the collision occurred in front of 20 Kingwood Ave near a stretch where eastbound signage shows 35 mph but the opposite side has a 25 mph speed limit and a speed-tracking sign. The commenter asked the council to prioritize traffic calming on Kingwood Avenue, including lowering speed limits on both sides of the road, installing sidewalks on the side without one, and adding speed-monitoring signs and crosswalks.
"Our kids' school bus was struck by a car from behind while the bus was stopped, in front of our driveway. Our son had not yet even made it to his seat, and one child suffered a concussion," the resident said during public comment.
The presiding official responded that the borough will continue to pursue traffic-calming measures and highlighted options including grant programs and county cooperation such as safer-routes-to-school funding. The official noted that installing a sidewalk on the other side of Kingwood Avenue might require neighbor easements or retaining walls in places and asked the resident to gather neighbor input to advance the project.
The council did not adopt a specific timeline for changes during the meeting; the official asked staff to continue work on options and grants.
