Council approves rezoning of two North Missouri Street lots to connecting corridor

The West Memphis City Council on a third and final reading approved rezoning two adjacent lots on North Missouri Street from Mixed Residential Medium to a Connecting Corridor zoning classification, the mayor announced.
City attorney Stevenson read the ordinance text for the council before members suspended the rules to move the matter to a third reading and vote. The measure was approved and assigned ordinance number 2707.
A council member asked what kinds of businesses would be allowed under the new zoning. “According to our zoning ordinance, there’s a table of uses that will allow a variety of businesses to go there on connecting corridor,” a staff member said. “They could be commercial businesses. They could be offices. They could be actually mixed use too with upper floor dwelling.”
The staff member added that any future project would be contingent on the property owner obtaining the required clearances and permits.
Another council member noted concerns about traffic and density near the site, saying the area was “already pretty tight and congested.” The council did not record additional conditions during the vote; the mayor declared the ordinance passed.
The council’s action changes the zoning for Lots 74 and 75 (addresses listed at 627 and 707–709 North Missouri Street) and clears the way for commercial, office or mixed-use projects there subject to standard permitting and review.
