On June 16, the Portsmouth Police Commission approved the renewal of the employment agreement for Deputy Chief Mike Maloney and accepted a federal grant to help pay for body armor.
A committee member moved to approve the deputy chief's employment agreement as presented and forward it to the City Council for action; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The commission did not read the contract into the record during the meeting. Deputy Chief Mike Maloney's renewal will be transmitted to the City Council for its consideration.
The commission also voted to accept a $7,408.23 award from the Bureau of Justice Assistance's Patrick Leahy Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program. The Chief described the grant as a 50/50 match that "offsets 50% of the cost of 15... approved vests." A committee member moved to accept the grant; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
The meeting record shows minutes from the May 19 regular commission meeting were also approved earlier in the session by voice vote.
The Chief reported that dispatch‑center remediation work has been completed but structural and HVAC equipment delays are holding up interior construction; no timeline for final completion was available. The commission heard a separate crime‑statistics and financial update during the meeting and was told several grant and project decisions remain pending at the state and federal level.
The commission adjourned and scheduled its next regular meeting for Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.
