The RSU 18 safety committee reported on a 90-minute meeting that included SRO observations and a safety-data briefing.
Committee members said school resource officers have noticed non-main doors left ajar during fair weather, which raises the risk of unauthorized entry. "They have noticed that particularly in this fair weather that people have a tendency to leave non main doors ajar... and that's an ideal way for an inappropriate person to enter," a committee member said.
Members also raised an unexpected concern: sparks from a local freight railroad's diesel engines. "They have caused multiple fires in Oakland," the committee member said and said they would invite the railroad's representative to explain corrective actions and mitigation steps. The speaker said they would write the railroad president and request a representative meet with the safety committee.
The committee reported that many adverse events involved dysregulated students and recommended forming a root-cause committee to identify systemic responses and resources for administrators, tech aides and other staff.
The board discussed next steps, including whether an invitation to a railroad official should be sent by the safety committee first and then, if the full board agrees, sent in the chair's name.
