Board approves notice-to-proceed for federally funded portable radios

The Crown Point Board of Public Works and Safety on June 17 approved a notice-to-proceed to lock pricing on a Motorola portable radio system while the city awaits an expected $1,000,000 federal grant earmarked for the Crown Point Police Department. Dominic Ford, who presented the item, said the formally quoted package would cost $993,863.84 and includes handheld radios, peripherals, batteries, chargers and in-car radios with associated subscription services.
"Our quote is at $993,863.84, which is all of the radios, the peripherals, batteries, chargers, shoulder mic phones, in, about 7 new in car radios to replace some of the ones that we're starting to have issues with," Dominic Ford said. Ford told the board Motorola agreed to hold pricing so the city would not pay more if federal funds are released in October as anticipated.
Ford said the radios are past their expected service life — the department's portable units are about 14 years old — and that repair costs have risen. He told the board the federal appropriation was approved by Congress and is noncompetitive, but that the notice is structured so the city would not be obligated to buy if the grant funds are not released.
Alex (city legal) recommended approval of the notice, and the board voted to approve the request. The board did not provide an individual roll-call tally on the record; the motion passed by voice vote.
The item will return for formal execution if and when funds are released and procurement steps are completed.
