The board moved to appoint Jeff Melhoff, the current deputy director and fiscal chief, as interim director and directed an executive committee (Senators DeKarr, Larson, and Hansen) to conduct an application and review process for a permanent director to be completed by Aug. 31, 2026.
Representative Mulder introduced the motion, which emphasized both confidence in Melhoff’s capabilities and the need for an open selection process to identify the best long-term candidate. Members praised Melhoff’s experience and his prior leadership role in fiscal matters. The motion passed by voice vote; Melhoff accepted the interim appointment at the meeting.
The board said the interim appointment is temporary and the executive committee will carry out the recruitment and review process. The board asked staff to proceed with an application process and to return with recommendations by the stated timeline.
