Council swears in firefighters and honors Tree City USA recognition

The North Platte City Council opened its June 16 meeting with ceremonial items. The mayor administered the oath of office to newly appointed firefighters and invited family photos following the swearing-in.
The council then recognized the North Platte Tree Board for the city’s 43rd consecutive Tree City USA designation. Mary Shimon, chairperson of the Tree Board (introduced by the mayor), described recent activities: planting trees in Cody Park and honoring residents with commemorative plantings, distributing ponderosa pines and educational bookmarks to third graders (292 students), distributing 18 free tree grants, and using Nebraska Environmental Trust funds to support a community tree inventory and consultant work.
The mayor thanked board members and staff and noted urban forestry’s role in shade, stormwater management, air quality and neighborhood character.
