Temple Terrace OKs new 400 kW generator and change order for Fire Station No. 1 and EOC

City council approved a change order June 16 to replace the generator serving Fire Station No. 1 and to provide backup power to the new Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
City Manager Beia told the council engineers discovered the generator originally expected to serve both facilities was labeled 208 volts but is producing 240 volts. Because the new EOC is designed for 208-volt service, staff recommended replacing the aging generator with a modern 400 kilowatt unit and performing associated rewiring and installation work so the two buildings can be safely served to current standards.
Staff presented line items including a generator cost of about $213,440 and installation and electrical work estimated at $125,100, for a combined total the manager described as $338,540; because of potential contingencies and unknowns, the fire department asked for authorization not to exceed $375,000 to avoid returning to council for small overruns. Council members asked about lead times, procurement approaches and whether piggybacking on other jurisdictions’ contracts had been considered; staff said they solicited multiple quotes and would follow up about possible contract-piggyback options.
Council moved and seconded the change-order approval; the motion passed by voice vote with no nays. Staff said the purchase is time-sensitive because lead times could otherwise delay delivery until after the next hurricane season.
