Board honors students: 41 Seal of Biliteracy recipients and state athletic champions

The Township of Union Board of Education used part of its June 16 meeting to highlight student accomplishments, awarding certificates to seniors who earned the Seal of Biliteracy and recognizing state and regional athletic achievements.
Lourdes Garcia, the district's world language/ESL supervisor, explained that the Seal of Biliteracy recognizes proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing in a chosen language and announced that 41 seniors earned the honor, with four students attaining the seal in two languages. "This is an assessment that is extremely rigorous ... we have 41 seniors who are attaining the Seal of Biliteracy and 4 of them who have decided to do it in 2 languages," Garcia said as names were read and certificates distributed.
Athletic director Mr. Zieser and coaches introduced the winter indoor girls track team and boys volleyball champions, noting state‑level victories and the track team's qualification to national competition in Philadelphia. Head coach Tony Stewart and assistant coaches were invited to the stage as certificates were given and a group photo was taken.
Board members praised the students and staff across arts, athletics and academics, and the superintendent noted that reports and photos of these highlights will be posted for the community.
The recognitions were ceremonial; no board action was required and the meeting proceeded to committee reports and routine votes.
