At the council meeting, the downtown committee chair read minutes describing an extensive snow-removal response during a recent severe storm and the committee’s continued discussion of downtown maintenance strategies. The committee reported that advance notice of parking restrictions was provided through text alerts and local media, that enforcement and towing began overnight and resulted in roughly 80 cars towed, and that crews removed dozens of truckloads of snow from downtown and Broadway.
"Over an 8 hour period, crews removed 60 truckloads of snow from downtown," the committee's report said, and additional removal produced another 30 truckloads on Broadway.
Committee members also discussed a proposed public-private partnership to provide consistent downtown walkway maintenance, including snow removal, leaf removal, trash management and planter upkeep. Will Klein, identified in the minutes as president of the downtown partnership, estimated a private-contractor cost of approximately $32,000 per year. The committee said further information is needed and that conversations would continue at future meetings.
The committee asked city staff to consider more frequent text alerts via the TXMG (text-my-gov) system to inform businesses and residents about closures and snow-removal activity. The committee minutes were entered into the record; no formal policy or contract award was voted on at this meeting.
