The Sacramento Preservation Commission voted June 17 to adopt an ordinance listing 3137 33rd Street as a landmark on the Sacramento Register of Historic and Cultural Resources.
Preservation intern Hazel Bess told commissioners the 1901 property in Oak Park appears eligible under Sacramento City Code section 17.604.021, criteria 1 and 3, for its association with early streetcar-suburb growth and as a representative example of working-class Queen Anne architecture. Bess said the historic evaluation prepared for the nomination noted long-term associations with working-class immigrant families and features such as a front-facing gable and a cutaway bay window that convey the house's character.
No public speakers registered on the nomination and staff recommended the commission forward an ordinance to the City Council. A commissioner moved to adopt the ordinance and the commission passed the motion by voice vote.
The staff report accompanying the nomination states the listing is exempt from environmental review under CEQA guidelines section 15308. Staff also noted that no objections to the listing had been filed with the department before the hearing.
Next steps: the ordinance will be transmitted to the City Council for final action, per the normal local landmark process.
