Public hearing opened on naming Pitman High School track after long-time coach

The Pitman Boro School District board on June 10 opened a public hearing required by district policy to consider naming the new track at Pitman High School after long-time coach Bob Eck.
Board members said a stakeholder committee has been formed to review the proposal and that a resolution could be brought to the Board in August. Committee members indicated some of the coach's family are expected to attend if the committee recommends the naming.
During the hearing, resident Matt Newcomb urged trustees to approve the proposal, describing Eck as "a legend in the Pitman community" who started the girls'track program and coached for decades.
"If you know Bob Eck or know anything about Bob Eck, he is a legend in the community," Newcomb said. "Everything he did was at the sacrifice of his own time ... it would just be a true honor to for our district to even have something associated with this."
Board President said the committee will review public comment before making a recommendation and that any formal naming action would come back to the board as a resolution at a future meeting.
No vote on the naming occurred at the June meeting; the public hearing was closed and the matter left to the stakeholder committee for a recommendation.
