Berlin Central School District honors retiring staff, hears tenure recommendations and moves to executive session

Moderator opened the Berlin Central School District meeting by honoring teacher William Ward, who "for more than 30 years" has served the district, saying his humor and close relationships with students and families have left an "indelible mark." The board also recognized multiple retiring operations staff and heard tenure recommendations for several educators and support staff.

A staff member recommended Tina Smith for tenure as a teaching assistant, highlighting her work in the STARS program and her role in de-escalation and classroom support. The same staff member recommended Stevie Savaria for tenure as an elementary special-education teacher and Erin Lee for tenure as a speech-language pathologist; Tammy Moore was praised and noted to have already been granted tenure.

Board recognition also included departing board member Derek Garner, whose six years on the Board of Education and service on the facilities committee were described as providing steady leadership and practical expertise. "His ability to analyze complex issues, ask the right questions, and help build consensus has been a tremendous asset," the chair said.

Toward the end of the meeting the chair asked the group to remain for photos and moved the meeting to a procedural item: "Can I get a motion to go into executive session for a contract?" the chair asked.
