Bicentennial Park opens inclusive splash pad; library and disability-network announce summer accessible events

Clerk Kennedy told the commission that Council Member Aisha Edwin shared an update noting Bicentennial Park (formerly Southeast Area Park) has opened its first universal-design splash pad, described as accessible for people with disabilities.

"The Bicentennial Park is open...the city's 1st universal design splash pack accessible for people with disabilities," Kennedy said on the council update.

At the meeting’s special presentation, Beth representing the Washington Library for the Blind and Print Disabled (administered by the Ann Arbor District Library) outlined upcoming programs including a button-and-pin exchange for teens and adults on July 3 and a performance by deaf rapper Sean Forbes on July 26. Beth described Forbes as "a nationally recognized deaf rapper...signing every lyric, creating a fully accessible and visually dynamic experience for audiences of all abilities."

Beth said the July 26 performance likely will take place in the library’s meeting room or lobby and that streaming availability depends on the performer’s preference; she offered to confirm and share streaming details with commission members.

Andrea Henry of the Disability Network of Washtenaw, Monroe and Livingston announced the commission-linked ADA anniversary event: the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act will be celebrated Saturday, July 25, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Disability Network’s Ann Arbor office. Henry said the event will include food, entertainment and community organizations and provided contact information for the network.

Commissioners asked logistical questions about venues and streaming. Chair Keeler and Vice Chair Damon expressed appreciation for the updates and encouraged commissioners to attend and publicize the events.

The commission took no formal action; announcements and community events were shared for outreach and information.
