Grafton council votes 6–1 to keep municipal judge pay at $700 a month

The Grafton City Council voted 6–1 to keep the Municipal Judge salary at $700 per month, following a recommendation from the Budget Committee and a request from newly elected Municipal Judge Dave Petersen for reconsideration.
Administrator Nick Ziegelmann told the council that former Judge Einarson had received $1,240 per month and that a review of other municipalities under 5,000 population showed $700 to be comparatively high; the Budget Committee recommended $700. Dave Petersen, who had been elected Municipal Judge in June, asked the council to reconsider and told members he was willing to "compromise between $700 and $1,240." Council member Brad Burianek moved to keep the salary at $700 and Council member Kylen Kostrzewski seconded; the motion passed on roll call with Brian Sieben voting "no." Mayor Chris West declared the motion carried.
Council members debated whether approving a higher salary now might set expectations for future replacements. The minutes record no amendment to the salary motion and indicate the council's decision was final at the meeting.
