The Miami Lakes Sports Hall of Fame selection committee on June 17 kept Aug. 1 as the nomination deadline for this year but debated moving future deadlines earlier so the committee has more time to vet nominees before council review.
A committee member said the Aug. 1 date compresses the timeline, noting that moving the deadline to June 1 or July 1 could give the panel more time to review candidates and prepare materials for the council submission. The chair said changing the date for future cycles would require amending committee language and seeking council approval.
The committee confirmed that staff already posted a social media call for nominations on Instagram; the chair said she will ask communications to post another call to drive nominations to the town website. Members discussed collecting nominee contact information and checking eligibility against the resolution language before formal votes.
Why it matters: With council agenda deadlines and the Dec. 12 ceremony schedule, the timing of nominations affects the committee’s ability to contact nominees, confirm attendance and finalize plaques and logistics.
Next steps: The committee will meet Aug. 10 at 5:30 p.m. to choose the class and submit materials to the council for its Aug. 18 agenda. Members agreed to centralize nominations through the listed email on the town nomination form and to gather contact information in advance when possible.
