Chesterfield watershed committee reports buoy installation, discusses Pinnacle Springs remediation and site tour plans

The Town of Chesterfield Watershed Committee reported that a water-monitoring buoy is being installed to support ongoing monitoring of Spofford Lake and surrounding watershed areas.
Committee members said a rope will secure the buoy to a tree on Bayard Tracy’s property so the instrument remains submerged. Bayard Tracy, committee member, and Richard Mellen, committee member, also reported on a meeting between a civil engineer and the Silverdale Association regarding possible remediation at Little Spofford Lake (Pinnacle Springs). They said progress was limited but discussions about next steps are ongoing.
Bayard Tracy reported that Tom Woodman said he would lead a site tour of Roads End Farm to identify areas that may be affecting the Spofford Lake watershed; Bayard and Chris will follow up to arrange the tour and identify potential testing sites. The committee also discussed whether to prioritize work on processes to better enforce current regulations around protected water bodies.
Bruce Jacobs, who spoke about a recent Conservation Commission event, said turnout was low but those who attended enjoyed the presentation. The committee agreed to move regular meetings from a bi-weekly cadence to monthly meetings, recommending the third Thursday of each month.
The committee adjourned after setting a special meeting for Aug. 29 and confirming the next full meeting for Sept. 19, 2024, both at 9:30 a.m.
