Select Board schedules public hearing on proposed water-rate hike; transfer station to stop accepting shingles

Selectboard member Sue Collins reported that the Water & Sewer Department ended 2025 in a deficit and recommended at least a 14% water-rate increase. She said increasing the quarterly water charge from $75 to $84 would still be short of the need and suggested matching sewer’s level at $90. The board agreed to hold a public hearing on proposed new water rates in the third week of March and directed that public notice be posted in the local paper, on the town website and Facebook page.
On meter issues in the Colebrook Homeowner’s Cooperative trailer park, Greg Placy said the trailers now have individual meters and will be billed by the town; Tim Stevens asked Water & Sewer staff to read master meters every two weeks to monitor major leaks.
Separately, the board decided the transfer station should stop accepting shingles because the town is losing money on the service; the policy takes effect March 1, 2026, and the town will advertise the change and direct residents to private roll-off services (JK Lynch).
