Committee approves moving Common Council meetings to 6 p.m.

The Stevens Point Public Policy & General Government Committee voted unanimously on June 8 to move Common Council meetings (third Monday) to a 6 p.m. start time.
Committee member Anne Guthrie moved the change and members said an earlier start helps keep meetings from running late and improves the ability of citizens and potential committee members to attend. Guthrie said an earlier hour “brings bedtime sooner and is helpful” for participants; another member noted earlier meetings can help recruit committee volunteers.
The committee approved the ordinance amendment to Section 2.01 by voice vote with no public comment opposing the change. The committee recorded the recommendation and the change will be forwarded to the Common Council for final action.
Staff said the procedural change has arisen repeatedly in public meetings and there were no immediate legal or budgetary barriers noted.
