Fincastle council hears park improvements update; pond remedies discussed

Councilmember Ed Bordett and Town Manager Melanie McFadyen told the Town Council that they met with a representative from the VOF at Big Spring Park to review recent improvements. According to their report at the Oct. 10 meeting, the VOF representative was pleased with the progress and said there may be grant opportunities to support future work.
During the town manager’s report the council also discussed the condition of the town pond. Councilmember Bill Gaul outlined a range of possible responses to the pond’s vegetation and water-condition concerns: leave the pond as is; treat the water with chemicals; physically dredge accumulated vegetation; add additional aerators; introduce more grass carp; add gravel to form a ledge; or install an Agi-Drain. The council did not record a funding allocation or select a preferred remediation method during the meeting. Councilmembers noted the VOF representative’s favorable view of park improvements and the potential to pursue grant funding to aid future projects.
