Floyd council sets budget calendar, approves public hearing for June 3 and reviews $17,500 donation worksheet

The Floyd Town Council voted April 21 to authorize Town Manager Andrew Morris to advertise a public hearing on the FY2026-2027 budget for Wednesday, June 3, 2026. Councilman Chris Bower moved to authorize the advertisement; Councilwoman Lisa Thompson seconded the motion, which passed on a unanimous roll-call vote.
Town Manager Andrew Morris asked members to complete the donation worksheet provided before the May 7 meeting so the town can calculate average awards. Morris said the current donation budget is $17,500, with a maximum award of $2,500 per organization. He stated the Library and Community Action are budgeted as separate line items totaling $5,000. Morris also explained a Virginia Commission for the Arts (VCA) matching grant that, if awarded, would be divided among Handmade Music School, Old Church Gallery, Floyd Center for the Arts and The June Bug Center. Mayor Will Griffin asked that Sustain Floyd be added to the worksheet for possible Farmers Market support.
Earlier in the meeting, Morris told the council that the Loan Pool account balance had been overstated after funds were deposited into the wrong account; he said the error has been corrected and the adjustment will appear in next month’s financial report.
The council received no public comments and approved the April 2 meeting minutes by unanimous vote. Council members were asked to submit their donation worksheet figures so staff can calculate recommended allocations, which the council may amend at a future meeting during the FY2026-27 budget process.
The council adjourned at 6:02 p.m. and will reconvene on May 7, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.
