Floyd Council approves corrected minutes, appoints burial ground trustee and authorizes writ correction

The Floyd Town Council on March 5 approved corrected minutes from its Feb. 19 meeting, confirmed a nomination to the Jacksonville Burial Ground Board and authorized a legal filing to correct a Writ of Election.
Vice Mayor Chris Bond opened the consent agenda and Councilman Chris Bower asked for a correction to the Feb. 19 minutes, saying the record should reflect that a potential “partnership,” not a “sponsorship,” had been discussed and that the term “quid pro quo” was not used. Councilman Bruce Turner confirmed that partnerships had been discussed. Councilman Turner moved and Councilwoman Lisa Thompson seconded a motion to approve the minutes as corrected; the motion carried on a roll call with Councilwoman Lisa Thompson, Councilman Chris Bower and Councilman Bruce Turner voting yes, Vice Mayor Bond abstaining and Mayor Will Griffin absent.
On the Jacksonville Burial Ground Board, Vice Mayor Bond reported the board had nominated Doug Weddle at its Oct. 29, 2025 meeting and forwarded the nomination to the council for approval. Councilman Chris Bower asked about term limits; council members said the burial ground trustees historically have not had term limits. Councilman Bower moved, seconded by Councilman Turner, to approve Mr. Weddle’s appointment to the Board of Trustees of the Jacksonville Burial Ground, Incorporated; the motion passed with the same roll-call pattern: Thompson, Bower and Turner yes; Bond abstained; Griffin absent. The appointment will be submitted to the court for final approval.
Town Clerk Lynn Gregory reported a typographical error in a Writ of Election in which a council term intended to end Dec. 31, 2027, had been listed as Dec. 31, 2029. Town Attorney Janet Murrell outlined the correction process — filing a motion to amend the order and submitting amended documents to Judge Fleenor — and asked the council to authorize her to file the corrected petition and writ on the town’s behalf. Councilman Turner moved, Councilman Bower seconded, and the council approved the authorization with the same roll-call pattern as the other motions.
The council took no additional formal action during the March 5 meeting.
