Board hears operations update, signs ethics pledge and approves course additions, donations and travel

The Lexington County School District Two Board of Trustees received an operations and facilities update on Jan. 16, approved several routine administrative items and signed the district ethics principles poster.
Operations director Mister Warren reviewed facility projects in progress: the Brooklyn Casey High School dance studio (targeted Feb–Mar completion), LED-light installations for softball and baseball fields at Brooklyn Casey and Airport High School, tennis-court refurbishments, turf/returf designs for stadiums and epoxy flooring at the community education center. Warren also said new radios are being installed districtwide and vape detectors have been implemented in several high-school restrooms.
On governance and routine approvals, the board signed the South Carolina school board member ethical principles poster and trustees voted to approve two new high-school preparatory courses added to the course guide: a mathematics-assistance class (introductory to Algebra 1) and a literacy prep course to support readiness for English 2; administration said these would be recommended electives for students identified by data rather than broadly required.
The board also accepted a $15,000 donation from House of Rayford for Riverbanks Elementary School's after-school program, approved the superintendent's request to attend the AASA national conference in March 2025, and approved five student-travel requests in a single motion.
Trustees asked for additional information about the turf bids and safety features for synthetic surfaces; Warren said staff will provide board members with specifications and RFP/RFQ documents for transparency before awards are finalized. Trustee Rucker asked for information about cooling features and safety for turf; Warren said the engineer and vendors are advising on specifications and cooling components.
What happens next: Operations staff will bring bid documents and turf/specification information to the board as requested; the district will continue with scheduled installations and provide updates to trustees.
