Flat Rock council sets budget deadlines, approves Carl Sandburg event, and confirms incoming village attorney

During the March 12, 2026 meeting the Village of Flat Rock Council handled a set of administrative and calendar items. Budget Officer (Vice Mayor) Toner presented the FY 2026–27 budget worksheet and asked council members to deliver proposed figures at the March 30, 2026 agenda meeting; a budget workshop is scheduled for April 9, 2026 following the regular council meeting.
Mayor Anne G. Coletta relayed a request from Friends of Carl Sandburg to hold a welcome party on Village Hall property in July for the incoming Carl Sandburg Home superintendent; Council Member Jeter moved to approve the request, Council Member Carpenter seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Chief Will Sheehan of Blue Ridge Fire & Rescue told the council the fire department will offer its property for parking during the welcome event.
Mayor Coletta also reported that a contract with Brian Gulden of Van Winkle Law Firm has been agreed and will take effect with his start as Village Attorney on May 1, 2026, subject to the mayor's signature on the contract; she said Mr. Gulden will be invited to attend a council meeting before May 1 so council members can meet him.
Other items included scheduling and committee updates: planning and board of adjustment meeting dates, community event notices, and an operational note that kudzu spraying is scheduled for June 4, 2026. Council adjourned at 10:55 a.m.
Next steps: Council members will submit budget figures by March 30; staff will publish meeting materials for the April 9 budget workshop and coordinate event logistics for the Carl Sandburg welcome party with the Friends group and Blue Ridge Fire & Rescue.
