Fairview council discusses options, committee and forester for new park property

Fairview councilmembers spent part of their May 14 meeting reviewing options for developing a recently acquired parcel the town intends to use as parkland.
Mayor Elizabeth B. Long said she had looked at a park in Indian Trail that cost about $250,000 and emphasized that any public project will require engineering drawings, public input and a bidding process. "Whatever we do, it will need engineering drawings: public input and be put out to bid," she said.
Councilmember Jerry Clontz reported he walked the property and said the site contains more wooded area than he had expected; he recommended clearing underbrush to locate the property corners. Mayor Long offered to contact a forester regarding the trees and said the town should establish a park advisory committee to guide planning. Councilmember Arnold Price recommended consulting the Fire Department about the property’s use and implications for emergency access.
Council discussion also included a request from Jerry Clontz that more budget be allocated for work on the property. No formal appropriation was made at the May 14 meeting; the Capital Improvement Plan was later adjusted separately during budget discussion.
The council did not adopt a final plan or funding package for park construction at the meeting; members described early steps the town should take before contracting for work.
