Elkin students recognized for state Beta convention placements; several to attend nationals

Elkin City Schools recognized dozens of Beta Club members from elementary, junior and high school for state placements; multiple students and teams placed in categories including academic tests, visual arts and performing arts, and several students qualified for national Beta in Orlando in June.
Board members and school staff used the meeting to celebrate student achievements at the recent North Carolina State Beta convention. Dr. Emily Rycroft and several sponsors presented awards for elementary-, junior- and high-school competitors and named many students who placed in state events.
Dr. Rycroft said the National Beta Club honors "achievement, character, leadership" and highlighted service projects the clubs performed. She asked sponsors to recognize state placements; the elementary marketing and communications team placed first in state academic testing, and multiple individual students earned 1st–5th place finishes across categories.
At the high-school level, several students and teams earned placements. The board heard that Isabella Estrada was champion for 12th-grade Spanish and that the district had group winners in 3D design and digital portfolios. Dr. Rycroft noted students who qualified for national Beta competition in Orlando, scheduled for late June.
Board members and the chair publicly thanked sponsors, parents and the Education Foundation for supporting student activities. The recognition drew remarks of pride from trustees and a round of applause for students who advanced to nationals.
