Board approves budget amendments, selects new auditor and OKs CTE film course; calendar adjusted after snow

Elkin City Schools trustees approved a package of budget amendments, accepted a new auditor contract, approved a new career‑technical education course, and revised the school calendar during their Jan. 27 meeting.
Finance director Rachel Creasy presented local, state and federal budget amendments and explained that state program adjustments (a $53,054 PRC increase was noted) had been incorporated into the revisions. Creasy said the district’s fund balance remained at the fiscal 2024 level, with staff citing about $308,000 on hand and advising the board that drawing on fund balance would be reported when necessary.
Creasy also presented an engagement letter from Anderson, Smith & White for audit services. She said the firm proposed a capped first‑year fee of $41,000 and noted the firm serves a large number of school districts; the board approved the contract.
On academics, the board approved adding a level‑1 and level‑2 film, television and video production course as part of the CTE program. Miss Carpenter said the course would articulate to Surry Community College’s digital media offerings; trustees approved adding the course to the course registration guide so student interest can be assessed.
Finally, Superintendent Dr. Steve Hall reviewed calendar adjustments following winter weather (remote days, no‑school days and optional teacher workdays). After accounting for the schedule changes, the district reported 1,042 instructional hours with three remote days still available; the board approved the revised calendar.
The meeting also approved two overnight student trips (HOSA and DECA) and the personnel report for Jan. 27. The board adjourned following several announcements about upcoming training and the next regular meeting.
