Adair County commissioners voted on June 1 to close the Archer Lane crossing after being advised by BNSF and the Missouri Department of Transportation that a safety study determined the crossing is dangerous. Commissioners recorded that BNSF and MODOT will each pay the county $300,000 for the closure and an additional $75,000 to cover signage and barricade costs; the west-side barricades will be placed 25 feet on BNSF right-of-way to preserve limited access for a landowner.
Commissioner McHenry made the motion to close the crossing and Commissioner King seconded; the motion passed with all commissioners voting in favor. The commission said it had previously held a hearing in 2025 where several affected landowners opposed closure but acknowledged the safety concerns. County staff indicated Englewood Lane has already been rebuilt in preparation for the closure to preserve connectivity for affected property owners.
The decision follows repeated communication from BNSF and MODOT that they could close the crossing on their own but asked the county to act to formalize the closure; the county’s attorney advised the commission that if the crossing remained open after being deemed dangerous the county could face liability in the event of an accident. The commission did not specify a final closure date in the minutes.
