Smithfield adopts updated FEMA flood insurance rate maps to maintain coverage

The Smithfield Town Council voted June 16 to adopt updated FEMA flood insurance rate maps and related Flood Insurance Study reports, a required step to keep town properties eligible for the National Flood Insurance Program.
Todd Manning, director of emergency management, told the council the changes were minimal and would not produce widespread map shifts. “These were minimal changes to the flood plain maps,” Manning said, and urged councilors to adopt the updates so residents who rely on the National Flood Insurance Program retain eligibility.
The council opened and closed a public hearing on the item and passed the measure by voice vote with no recorded opposition. The adoption ensures compliance with federal requirements tied to flood insurance for affected property owners.
Council staff will file the adoption ordinance and related FIS documents as required to maintain the town’s participation in the program.
