Commission hears training building funding update, gas‑meter trial and dispatch staffing numbers

Chief Albert updated the Public Safety Commission on facility and equipment projects at the June 15 meeting. He said the purchase order for a training building has finally posted and that he secured an additional $100,000 in state monies (he said it was earmarked in a state budget line) to support a change order; that funding is expected to be available in August or September and will come before the committee and finance for formal approval.
The chief also described a trial of new cloud-connected gas meters. After repeated repairs to aging meters (about $5,000 in repairs this year), a vendor demonstrated meters and the department is running a trial through July 1. The proposed lease model would place a meter on every rig, cost about $5,000 per year and provide cloud-stored timestamped readings to reduce calibration risk and documentation gaps when building entries occur.
Chief Albert said new washer and gear extractors and dryers were delivered for Cross Street station and that the bond for Cross Street was approved; he plans to convene a building committee to advance next steps.
On telecommunications, he reported there are 19 dispatchers with one vacant position posted and a deputy-director hire in background checks. He cited approximately 7,600 incidents, 2,427 total 9-1-1 calls and 5,488 routine calls, as stated in his report.
No members of the public spoke during the agenda-only public hearing. The commission approved the meeting minutes and adjourned at 7:09 p.m.
