At its May 5 meeting, the Wingate Joint Land Use Board voted unanimously to recommend rezoning 2.72 acres of Parcel 09015015 from RA-20 to B-6 so Wingate University can build a performance/strength-conditioning facility on campus. Planner John Wear presented the petition and told the board that the Wingate 2030 land-use plan identifies the area as University Campus and that staff recommended approval.
Michelle Lancaster, representing Wingate University, said the university purchased the parcel in 1999 for stadium construction and that a portion had never been rezoned. She described plans for an approximately 14,000-square-foot facility, architecturally similar to the adjacent building, and said construction would take about nine to 12 months.
Vice-Chair Blair Stegall moved to recommend approval; Myra Tomberlin seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. The rezoning petition and staff report are attached as Exhibit A to the meeting minutes.
