Henderson County reports groundbreakings for jail and courthouse; towns update Hurricane Helene repairs

Vice Chair J. Michael Edney told the Local Government Committee for Cooperative Action on April 21 that groundbreakings are underway for Henderson County’s new jail and new courthouse, and that the county will begin reviewing the possibility of a new Fletcher Library.
Municipal officials across the county described ongoing recovery work related to Hurricane Helene. Village of Flat Rock Mayor Anne Coletta said the Village awarded a contract for the King Creek mitigation project to repair storm damage and is pursuing FEMA reimbursement. Councilwoman Sandra Goode reported Mills River has begun repairs on a back loop damaged by the storm with an expected completion around June 1 and has started receiving FEMA reimbursements.
Officials did not provide detailed project budgets, contractor names or firm timelines beyond the Mills River repair estimate. County and municipal staff said they are proceeding with project implementation and reimbursement requests to FEMA where eligible. The LGCCA set its next meeting for July 21, 2026, to be hosted by the Town of Fletcher; the meeting adjourned at 3:51 p.m.
