Commission to consult fire chiefs on pond access, pauses direct dry‑hydrant installations

Chairman Harold Handwerk reintroduced a discussion of dry hydrants and access to ponds at the June 17 meeting, asking whether the township should pursue installations or instead focus on improving roadway access to water sources.
"Due to the DEP requirements, the Township should stay out of proposing to install dry hydrants but should instead focus on access to waterways," said Fritz Najarian. Commissioners and staff noted that local fire chiefs favor improving pond access at sites nearest roads rather than the township directly installing dry hydrants. Perry Long said he had received Phil Hobel’s map but that it omitted Ontelaunee Park and the golf course; Perry had shared Hobel’s materials with the commission.
Zoning Officer Jim Macort suggested Heather at KCE could prepare a GIS overlay showing ponds and road access points. Commissioners agreed the next step was to survey area fire chiefs for their priorities and technical preferences: Harold Handwerk offered to speak with Gary at New Tripoli Fire and Larry Bachman said he would contact Kevin at the Lynnport station. Fritz Najarian added he had sent a letter to six recipients involved with Leaser Lake and local government proposing dry hydrants at the boat accesses.
Next steps: staff or consultants will prepare the GIS overlay if available and the commission will report results of the fire chiefs’ input at a future meeting; possible map updates and a follow‑up agenda item were suggested.
