Port Jefferson approves emergency repairs, creates capital lines and moves contingency funds

The Port Jefferson Board of Trustees on July 8 approved emergency repairs to the Village Center elevator and a second‑floor HVAC unit and authorized the budget amendments and capital line items needed to pay for them.
The board approved a $29,365.15 quotation from TK Elevator Corporation for an elevator valve repair and a $29,407 quotation from Central Air Systems Inc. to repair the Village Center second‑floor HVAC unit. Treasurer Steven Gafka explained several separate resolutions were required because the village’s accounting software uses distinct funds for different items and capital line items did not previously exist for the elevator and HVAC repairs. "Because of the amount of money that we're spending, it’s important to have those approved separately for each individual repair," Gafka said.
Trustees authorized the appropriation of contingency funds and budget transfers to cover the repairs and created new capital fund line items to track the expenditures. The board approved a transfer to fund the yearly street sweeper lease payment ($63,899) and a $30,000 JCAP ADA ramp grant expense among related budget amendments. Trustee votes on each emergency repair resolution were recorded by voice and each motion carried.
