Commissioners accept lower retirement contribution and tout improved landfill performance

Separately, a commissioner reported operational improvements at the county landfill: staffing is fully restored for the first time in years, recent Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) inspection findings required only a few fixes that have been completed, and leachate is below the county’s 25% target threshold. The commissioner said those operational changes reduced the county’s exposure to potential future borrowing and saved costs by completing work in-house rather than bidding out projects.
Board members praised the retirement-staff and landfill teams and moved to accept the reports. The board’s approvals were recorded by voice vote.
The board also acknowledged community and veterans' events, including staff assistance in facilitating medals for a World War II veteran through an outside congressional office.
Next steps: the retirement contribution change will be reflected in FY2026 budget accounting and staff will continue monitoring landfill compliance and capacity.
