Code enforcement officer asks for zoning-administrator title to strengthen enforcement

At the May 13 meeting, Code Enforcement Officer Harold Veasel requested that the Commissioners give him the Zoning Administrator title and associated authority in addition to his current duties, which he said would improve the town’s ability to address violations and to verify that building and zoning permit projects comply with standards.
Assistant Town Attorney Jen Dindinger responded that she would look into what authorities could lawfully be conferred and would report back to the Commissioners. No formal action or vote was taken on the request at this meeting.
The change would alter enforcement responsibilities and the town’s internal permit-verification process; staff noted that MDIA currently plays a role in inspections and that clarifying responsibilities may be part of Dindinger’s review.
