Peterborough chooses 'Peterborough Local' power rate; chair votes no over 100% renewable goal

The Peterborough Select Board voted 2–1 on Jan. 20 to enroll municipal accounts in the Community Power Coalition of New Hampshire's 'Peterborough Local' supply option at 14.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, effective Feb. 1 through July 31, 2026.
Town Administrator Nicole MacStay presented rate options and said choosing 'Peterborough Local' would generate about $3,600 a year for the town’s sustainability discretionary fund, which she said already holds roughly $180,000 from residential participation. Chair Tyler Ward said he objected to the option because it guarantees only a 25% renewable minimum, while the town's stated objective is 100% renewable energy for municipal accounts. MacStay cautioned that selecting the 'Clean 100' option would substantially increase electricity costs beyond what the town budgeted.
Bill Kennedy moved to accept the Peterborough Local rate; Bonnie Tucker seconded. The motion passed with Kennedy and Tucker voting in favor and Ward voting nay.
The rate selection applies to most municipal meters, excluding those in the net metering program. The board did not change municipal budgeting at this meeting; MacStay warned the higher-cost Clean 100 alternative would require additional appropriation or budget adjustments.
