UPD introduces new assistant chief; department reports calm July 4 weekend

Midvale city leaders on July 7 met Assistant Chief Hoyle, newly assigned to work with Unified Police Department (UPD) leadership for local coverage and continuity.
Chief April Morse briefed the council on UPD activity for June and July 3–5. She recognized crossing guard Kim Watson for stopping to support a West Jordan crossing guard during a medical emergency while continuing her crossing duties; the department also participated in a large‑scale bomb drill with Intermountain Health and completed a transition from Salt Lake County IT services to an internal UPD IT service, an update that briefly disrupted business email and some desk phones but did not affect emergency 911 lines.
Morse said UPD staffed additional officers specifically for fireworks response over the holiday weekend and logged 139 fireworks‑related calls; most interactions were educational, with a few enforcement actions and one arrest. Chief Jason Mazarin introduced Assistant Chief Hoyle, who described three decades in law enforcement and experience leading a department in Holiday and other emergency‑management roles. Council members welcomed Hoyle and thanked UPD for its staffing and outreach during the holiday period.
The council also noted ongoing discussions about county law enforcement district changes and said the UPD board will discuss the county's intent to withdraw from the district at a future meeting.
