Guest speaker Miss Mayman tells Mayor’s Youth Council teaching is 'rewarding' but 'hard work'

Miss Mayman, introduced as the meeting’s guest speaker, told the Mayor’s Youth Council that elementary teaching is “one of the most rewarding jobs” while also describing it as demanding work.

In a roughly 10-minute presentation, Miss Mayman recounted watching a child read a first full sentence and called that “amazing,” saying those moments make long hours worth it. “Imagine watching a kid read their very first full sentence…When that light bulb turns on, it’s amazing,” she said.

She described the scope of teachers’ work beyond classroom instruction: lesson planning evenings and weekends, meetings, answering emails and supporting students who arrive at school facing hunger, bullying or family stress. “It can be emotionally exhausting,” she said, adding that teachers are often asked to provide support for issues they are not trained to address.

Miss Mayman also said teachers help shape students’ character as well as their academic skills — teaching kindness, respect and resilience alongside reading and math — and urged the audience to thank teachers. She closed by encouraging anyone considering a career that “truly matters” to consider teaching.
